  • Death In The Afternoon

    Death in the Afternoon

In 1932, Ernest Hemingway published Death in the Afternoon, a nonfiction account of the customs of Spanish bullfighting. Hemingway was living in Europe, and there’s ample documentation of his time spent in bars and cafes across the continent. There are few authors out there whose writing can make you want a drink more reliably than Papa (the fishing-and-white-wine-drinking scene in The Sun Also Rises has forever changed the way we think about white wine), so if a cocktail comes with his recommendation, we’re all for it. This drink was published in a 1935 collection of celebrity cocktail recipes, and Hemingway’s own instructions are thus: "Pour one jigger of absinthe into a champagne glass. Add iced champagne until it attains the proper opalescent milkiness. Drink three to five of these slowly." We don’t necessarily recommend the three-to-five part, but hey -- you’re a grown-up. You can make up your own mind.

    Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 oz absinthe
  • 4 oz brut champagne
  • Preparation:

  • Pour the absinthe into a champagne flute and top with champagne.
  • Corpse Reviver

    Corpse Reviver Cocktail

Now this is a fun, stylish cocktail for Halloween parties. It pairs well in a dark cocktail menu with the Black Martini for a little scare with some class. The story of the Corpse Reviver is that of a drink "taken before 11 a.m., or whenever steam and energy are needed," according to The Savoy Cocktail Book (Harry Craddock, 1930). There are a number of other variations of the drink, which have been researched quite diligently at Bitters & Twisted.

    Yield: 1 Cocktail

    Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 oz brandy
  • 3/4 oz Calvados or other apple brandy
  • 3/4 oz sweet vermouth
  • Preparation:

  • Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice.
  • Stir well.
  • Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
  • Corpse Reviver #2 ( 1 )

    Corpse Reviver 2011 Cocktail - Hendrick's Gin

The Corpse Reviver #2 is a classic cocktail, one of the greats made with gin back when people really loved their gin cocktails. It is a true testament to the mixability of the botanical-filled spirit and a drink I suggest everyone experience at least once in their lifetime. The recipe is quite simple: gin, wine (Lillet), orange and absinthe liqueurs, and lemon juice. The culmination of each of these fascinating ingredients is a cocktail lovers' dream come true.

As is the case with the brandy Corpse Reviver, this drink (and other's that have taken the name) are said to have been useful back in the day for reviving those souls who may have had one two many the previous night. They are meant to snap you back into reality, though I would simply add it to the 'hair of the dog' theory for curing hangovers. Also, note the equal measurements...the easier the better for the sufferer.

    Ingredients:

  • 1 ounce gin1
